Guadalajara. A metropolitan city about 5 1/2 hours northwest of Mexico City. The Current population is listed at just about 4.5 million people, and that is the metro population only. The Sunday Traveler had not been back to Guadalajara for 25 years. Changes? You’d better believe it. What were once suburbs have grown into the mass of the main city, and the traffic is not to be overlooked; while I was there a light smog was noticeable. All of this does not take away the beauty, though. The city has a wonderfully vibrant vibe that includes modern and rustic charm all rolled into one. I was on sensory overload the entire two weeks I was there. Color, art, murals, colonial plazas, street vendors, and modern malls.
The Sunday Traveler will start out with just a few photos of the main downtown plaza that is home to the cathedral on one side.
Two weeks in this wonderful city I used to call home was not enough, and my mind spins on getting back soon, but first needing to scale back and downsize on the current home front here in the US in order to travel more. If not now, when?
Thank you for all the photos and detail in your writing. My dad is from Guadalajara and your blog gives me a place to go when I’m curious of my background.

Oh I love your description of this city that I visited in 1974! Unfortunately I got food poisoning so my only memories are of the inside of a hotel room 😦

I loved Guadalajara! I was doing some work with a microfinance organization at the time, and we spent a lot of our days with small artisans there. It was a charming city. Glad you found your return to be so pleasant!
