I walked the couple blocks down to the creek on Sunday afternoon. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen the sun. The clouds drifted in and out, and my mood started to lift. Since we’ve moved here, this has been my place for soothing my soul. Walking through the gate that separates our neighborhood from the trail and creek, I was greeted by the cacophony of birds up in the old leafless oak trees that line the creek banks; that wonderful sound of what seemed like hundreds of birds reveling in the sun that kept breaking through the clouds. I looked up to see a black crow, wings spread, gliding above the branches. And the creek, filled with water for probably the first time in years, gurgling along, side-stepping rocks and reeds in some places, and running smooth in others.
I walked along the trail for some thirty minutes, and as I headed back to the gate I realized that the birds were quiet. Had the rucus they were raising when I arrived been a greeting to me telling me they were happy to see me again after a lapse in visits? I like to think so.

Thanks, Amy. The predictions of El Niño were right on. We’re having a couple days break now, but more rain on the way. Absolutely cannot complain.
