Gifts from the beach. The first photo is a quarter of a sand dollar left by someone on a fence post leading up from the beach. To see the detail inside the dollar in macro takes my breath away; such intricate weaving created by the hands of the sea. How is this possible I wonder, this beauty, created by a universe beyond our knowing.
The second photo is of a sand dollar on the beach, cracked open by the waves, I think. I could spend days and days looking for these treasures. And meditating on the gifts that we are so freely given.

I love both of these, Angeline, especially not knowing at first what they were. The first one looks like ivory.

The first photo reminded me of ivory too; those pieces I see sometimes in the shops in Chinatown here in San Francisco.
Thanks, Janet. Have a good weekend.

The first photo I looked and looked trying, unsuccessfully, to figure out what it was. The second photo I was immediately caught by it’s beauty. Knowing what it was didn’t matter. At first glance I thought it was sunset shining through clouds.

I truly love that second photo; the sun was behind me shining down on the sand dollar and just lighting up the dollar and the grains of sand on and in it. The intricacy of the details in the first photo astound me. Thanks, Alison.

I intentionally looked long at the photos, especially the first one, before reading what you wrote. I had no clue what it was. Pretty amazing, as you note.

Macro really does make things difficult to identify sometimes. But the power to open the mystery up is incredible. Thanks for the visit, Felipe.

What treasures you are finding on your meanderings. Each has a unique quality that only time can bestow upon nature’s gifts. The close ups give us greater appreciation for these small jewels of the sea. Happy Photo Challenge.

Macros are just so good to be able to really see something that has been right there under our nose all along. Thanks, Sally.

These are beautiful images, and your comment about ‘gifts that we are so freely given’ really resonates. At a personal level, most of us appreciate these treasures, but collectively we contribute without thought to the destruction of nature. Sigh!
