The art buddha seems to frequently coordinate my travel destinations with great art exhibits in the city I happen to be visiting. My latest trip to Oahu was no exception. The Honolulu Museum of Art is showcasing Art Deco Hawaii, the first major museum exhibition to present the Hawaiian view on the International Art Deco style; this was at its height in the islands from the 1920s to the 1940s. You cannot imagine my extreme happiness when I was told that photos were permissible without the use of a flash; no problem, the lighting in the rooms was perfect. I went mid-week and there were two other people there that hurried through, so in essence I had a private viewing. Heaven to linger over each work.

I have to confess complete ignorance, Angeline. When I think Art Deco, Hawaii is probably the last place that would come to mind. These works prove just how wrong I was. Hawaiian culture and life lends itself very well to the Art Deco style. These works are stunning. What a fantastic exhibit to see! Be sure to pass along my thanks to the art buddha. 😉

You know, even though I had seen some of these paintings before (and I even have one hanging in my apartment (the girl reaching up to a tree to get fruit), I really didn’t associate it with art deco. This was an educational visit for me in addition to a soul fuel charging visit. I will definitely let the art buddha know you’ve sent along thanks to add to mine 🙂

Thanks, Madhu. I love his work too. I will post one more of his paintings at a later date; sad story that the painting I will show was his last, he went home after delivering it to the buyer and killed himself (and he was in his 20s, I think). Tragic!

The sculptures are just beautiful. I felt blessed to have seen this exhibition. Some of the paintings were made for the Matson ship liners first coming over to Hawaii.

Some of these were interesting to look at as I don’t normally see art detailing this content. I like the sculptures, especially the one of the figure on a horse.

Eugene Savage’s work is so detailed and full of activity, it is quite wonderful. The wood carvings of the rider on the horse and the Hawaiian Dance figure are of monkeypod and the spear fisherman is made from Milo wood. Thanks, Amy.
