Weekly Photo Challenge~California Dreamy

snowyroad2

Here in Northern California, where a severe drought is going on, we can only dream about a winter like this one that we had several years ago. This was a trip up to Lake Tahoe during a dreamy snowstorm.

I remember driving on that very road in the same conditions. We lingered just a little too long over coffee before we left Tahoe. The snow began to fall as big, fluffy flakes, dreamily dropping to blanket everything.
The scene became surreal as one car after the other slid off into a snow bank on the right or the left of the road.
I continued to aim the car for the middle of the road, and slowly and gently navigated it, feeling the bump-bump-bump of the chains.
    Hours passed – truly!
As we wended our way across Donner Pass, we were reminded of the story of the Donner Party. We nervously looked at each other as we realized we didn’t have anything in the car to eat. We really hadn’t planned ahead for this. (I won’t write here of the stories about the Donner Party)
I drove 6 hours (yes 6!) without taking my eyes off the road, without stopping and only barely crawling along that road.
We were relieved to finally reach some roadside cafe where we could rest from the joggling, and enjoy a bit to eat.
Thanks for your wonderful photography, and reminding me of that trip.
    Vincent
p.s. nowadays I enter snowy areas with a little more in the car than before – a little water, some snacks, and maybe a blanket or two…

  2. Angeline, lovely picture. Winters like that are part for the course here in southern Ontario. I don’t often think of snow in California. It makes your photo even more special!

What a beautiful shot Angeline which brings back so many memories of being stuck in that very storm!!! So hoping you get a decent winter this year but not sure I want to have to drive through all that again!

Thanks, Patti. President’s Day weekend? Wow!! It was the first time we’ve driven in snow like that in forever. Fun, but again, not. I don’t think we’d drive through something like that again either.

Beautiful photo, Angeline, and I really do hope it is a glimpse into your future rather than a blast from the past. California needs water in the worst way.

Thanks, John. I also hope that we get the rain and snow we need this year. We’ve just moved into an apartment recently, and I can’t tell you how glad I am to not have to worry about the back yard and letting it go dry, as well as all the lovely plants that we had out there too.

Personally I’d rather dream about a rainstorm than a snowstorm, but I guess it’s up to the dreamer! Lovely capture

  11. I wish we could send you some rain from here in France. It was dry and now it’s definitely not!! May you have this sort of winter again this year. In Wyoming last winter, the moisture level was 130% that of normal, a huge blessings,

It was pretty much of a white-out most of that trip up the mountain. There was no sky to be seen…..I just looked back at the photo, and think I now get what you were talking about. Those spots in the “sky” is snow on the windshield 🙂
