…Chacmool
A pre-Columbian sculpture always shown in this reclining position with its head turned, having a bowl on its abdomen. The figures were first noted in the 9th century AD in the valley of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. The bowls, or discs, were thought to be for sacrifices left for the gods, and other thoughts are that they were to place sacrifices of the heart of the victim sacrificed.
Here are a couple more of the Chacmool that I saw in Playa del Carmen, Mexico while I was there recently
I’ve not been consistent with this new round of the alphabet, and so it goes. My thanks as always to Frizztext for his leadership in this challenge.
Pre-dating the recliner rocker!

hi Angeline,
never heard from Chacmool sculptures before, thank you!

Hi Frizz,
They are interestingly represented, and one has to pretty much believe that the bowl on the stomach was for offerings left for the gods.

There is a lot more detailed information on Wikipedia and other sites, but what I’ve given here is the pared down version. I found all of this history in the Yucatan Peninsula to be fascinating.

They did grow a lot of maize! Maybe that’s what it was really for 🙂

I want to go back there too! But I cannot complain, here where I live it will be 69 degrees F, today and for most of the next couple of weeks. Not a good thing! It should be cold and raining, but it’s not.
Stay warm!!

Thanks, Ruth. This is a word I learned on this trip to Mexico; I had always seen these statues, but never investigated into what they were called or history.
