The Sunday Chronicle: Valladolid, Mexico

 

Valladolid, in Yucatan; a city built by the Spaniards, atop a pre-existing Maya city using the stone from the dismantled buildings that had been erected by the Maya (the Maya tried to revolt a year later but were put down by the Spaniards). Valladolid is named after what was the capital of Spain in the 1500s.

In the photo above, there is a woman sitting on the right in front of the gate of the church. I watched her for some time from the park across the street, and I’m not sure if she was resting, or waiting for the church to open its doors.

The woman is dressed in the local, traditional attire, that was seen on many of the older women in the town. The dress is called a hipil or huipil, or also, terno, and has been worn by the women in this part of Mexico, and parts of Guatemala for generations

Again, this woman caught my eye not only for her dress, but the sadness she seemed to carry. I’ll move on to a few other women to show you more of the dress, and the people in Valladolid who also caught my eye

And to show the contrast between young and older women’s dress

Backing up to one of the younger women in a photo above, this young girl’s hair was being fixed and she was being prepared for something, I’m not sure what, but her cute and carefree spirit came through in her photos.
