Scientific Studies

I was interested in the post by a fellow blogger, Ruth, today on Garbology, and her question on “how is your trash?”; this got me to thinking, and what struck me most is the difference in trash from the area Ruth lives in, Pittsburgh, PA, I believe, to the trash where I live, here in Northern California.  What can I say?

Thanks, Ruth, for initializing this fascinating anthropological study conducted between us today on the science of Garbology.

My photo was taken outside a local winery here in NorCal.

Having worked in a bar, I’ve seen similar trash heaps. As I’m sure you’re aware, those bottles’ best days are behind them. 🙂

Ahhh … but In California they sort the trash a lot more than in other places…. the recycling was very precise where I lived : the SF Peninsula, in Santa Clara Valley. Glass was separated (to be recycled), plastics separated according to the type they were then recycled or not, and batteries, florescent lights, light bulbs, chemical containers, left-over paint, garden sticks, dirt, and dead green stuff, high tech components from computers and cell phones, could not be put in the general trash – in fact there is not “general” trash there, kitchen trash can contain only that. And if we did it wrong they did NOT take the garbage away on pickup days….! We had to drive out in the boondocks, with an authorization ticket, to get rid of dangerous trash and it was organized by the county a couple of times per year..
Your very interesting photo, Angeline, only tells part of the story… that is why it looks so clean, and so un-garbagy…
    Cheers, Vera

PS: In the past the high tech companies did cause a lot of pollution in the soil of Silicon Valley so now they have gone the other way around to monitor what goes into landfills.

We definitely have separate recycle carts from trash, but all recyclable go into one cart and it gets sorted at the dump. But they do spot checks of the contents of the cart to keep people honest. And we do have special places to dispose of electronics, etc.
