Nepenthe. A restaurant located in Big Sur, California 800 feet above the Pacific Ocean. The original land was owned by Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth who sold it to the Fassett family in whose hands it has stayed since 1947.
The word Nepenthe is first seen in Homer’s Odyssey. It was said to be a potion used by the ancients that caused one to forget sorrow, pain, grief, or suffering.
Spend a little time here, and I can pretty much guarantee that you will forget everything but the beauty in front of you. It is a tri-level property lush with vegetation, with two dining areas, a gift shop, and vistas that are beyond compare. It is so much more than a restaurant.

You kind of have to know it’s there; the road is so winding that you can zip past it in a flash and not even see it. The lower level is the parking lot that is pretty protected with trees. Thanks! I’m glad you liked it.

I really believe it has to be. I’ve been up and down the coast here in California, on the coast of Mexico, and Hawaii, and have never had the feeling I had while at Nepenthe. It is amazing!

Oh, you do have to experience it for yourself to get the full impact. If anywhere near here it is worth the side trip.

Probably 25 years since I’ve been there. And speaking of old things, Homer got it from the Ancient Egyptians; some scholars theorize it was an early form of opium ;o)

Thanks Joseph. There is much more history of this place you can find via Google. Very interesting. These photos were actually taken with a little point and shoot camera I had at the time. In thinking back, I do believe this is the place that started my passion for photography, and when I came home and got a “real” camera.

It looks fabulous, Angeline – which is just as well because only the magnificent should be allowed along that stretch of coast. I drove it, with a friend, back in 1974 – though our budget (or total lack of one!) will have meant Nepenthe was never on our radar 😦

The restaurant is incredibly inexpensive, from burgers and salads to some more upscale food items. And a wonderful wine list, of course (but you’d better have a driver to get out of there if you’ve had wine). For anyone passing that way, it is definitely worth just a stop to see the incredible vistas from up there.
