The Letter N

Nepenthe

Nepenthe. A restaurant located in Big Sur, California 800 feet above the Pacific Ocean.  The original land was owned by Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth who sold it to the Fassett family in whose hands it has stayed since 1947.

The word Nepenthe is first seen in Homer’s Odyssey. It was said to be a potion used by the ancients that caused one to forget sorrow, pain, grief, or suffering.

Spend a little time here, and I can pretty much guarantee that you will forget everything but the beauty in front of you. It is a tri-level property lush with vegetation, with two dining areas, a gift shop, and vistas that are beyond compare. It is so much more than a restaurant.

We drove through the Big Sur more than a decade ago, did not know about this restaurant… Thank you for the beautiful post, Angeline!

You kind of have to know it’s there; the road is so winding that you can zip past it in a flash and not even see it. The lower level is the parking lot that is pretty protected with trees. Thanks! I’m glad you liked it.

Location. Location. Location. Never was that more true. California has many beautiful spots along its shore and this must be among the best.

I really believe it has to be. I’ve been up and down the coast here in California, on the coast of Mexico, and Hawaii, and have never had the feeling I had while at Nepenthe. It is amazing!

What a wonderful place!!!! And the views!!! And its history….!!!
If once in my life I happen to go there I will visit it, for sure!!!
Y si encima no es caro, tal vez sea el lugar donde plantar mi tienda y pensar mientras miro al mar!!!
Tendré que comentar todo esto con C…;)

Oh, you do have to experience it for yourself to get the full impact. If anywhere near here it is worth the side trip.
Es un lugar donde podras sentar y contemplar el mar por horas y horas.

Probably 25 years since I’ve been there. And speaking of old things, Homer got it from the Ancient Egyptians; some scholars theorize it was an early form of opium ;o)

Those Egyptians! I kind of guessed it was something along the line of opium, given its effects. I’ll actually have to go in and read what old Homer had to say about it.

  10. Beautiful photography of a beautiful spot, also the short educating text accompanying these photos, this post is a pleasure to peruse. PS, the photos also show how much phone photography has come of age.

Thanks Joseph. There is much more history of this place you can find via Google. Very interesting. These photos were actually taken with a little point and shoot camera I had at the time. In thinking back, I do believe this is the place that started my passion for photography, and when I came home and got a “real” camera.

  11. It looks fabulous, Angeline – which is just as well because only the magnificent should be allowed along that stretch of coast. I drove it, with a friend, back in 1974 – though our budget (or total lack of one!) will have meant Nepenthe was never on our radar 😦
