Cinco de Mayo; more of an American fiesta celebrating the battle of Puebla, Mexico, where the Mexicans defeated the French in 1862. It’s not so much of a big deal in Mexico; that’s reserved for September 16th, Mexican Independence Day, independence from Spanish rule.
But I digress. We are having a little party, and have a wonderful Mexican supermarket here in town that makes me feel like I’m back in Mexico.
And I didn’t even get to show you the deli. Delicious cooked salsas, guacamole, meats, fish. Enough to make a grown woman cry into her tequila.

How do they use the cacti? Do you know any recipes?

One simple dish is to cut them into string bean size strips (they will look like string beans at this point) and just saute them in a little oil, add some diced tomato and onion and serve as a vegetable side dish…of course any good Mexican will also add some chile of some kind. You can also dice them up, saute and add to scrambled egg along with salsa. The first time I ate them as a child, I had come home from school when we lived in Mexico and my Mom was cooking them; I asked her what that was and she said string beans, knowing full well if she said cactus I probably would not have eaten it.

I love those pictures of fresh produce with the avocados, peppers and … cactus leaves? (My curiosity is piqued now.) Also, not having seen one before, I thought tomatillos were much smaller than those, heh. You learn something everyday. 🙂 Thanks, Angeline!

Thanks Titabuds. Yes, those are cactus (nopales in Spanish), and the tomatillos here and in Mexico are all about the size of those in the photo. That’s the part of the store I love the best, the produce/veggie section.
