The Mariachi are Mexican musicians that originated in the state of Jalisco (pronounced halisco) sometime in the 19th century. It is more than just music, it is such a part of the Mexican culture.
We are lucky enough to have a local Mexican restaurant, El Tapatio, that has mariachi playing on Friday nights, and what could be better in a Mexican restaurant than enjoying the food and listening to the music. I spent my summers in Mexico with relatives when I was growing up, and hearing mariachi music takes me back there in a flash.
It’s not the norm any more, at least with mariachi groups here in US restaurants, to have a harp. It’s awkward to move around. Last Friday night I was happy beyond belief to walk in to El Tapatio and see a harp amongst the mariachi. That really took me back to a favorite restaurant in Mexico City many years ago, La Fonda del Recuerdo that specializes in food and music from Veracruz.

Mariachi music is a huge part of my life and my family’s. It is so moving and powerful. I am Mexican and every major holiday and major event had mariachis so I grew up with them my whole life. They played at my quincenera and also at my wedding and just add so much to my memories of those special days.

Mariachi music absolutely lights up my heart! I agree, it is moving and powerful. We had mariachis at our wedding too…wouldn’t have been the same without them. I grew up between San Antonio, Tx and Mexico so was always surrounded with this music. Definitely ingrained in a Mexican’s soul.

I’m half mexican, but very white washed. I do like mariachi music though. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a harp in a mariachi band.

The music of the harp in the group is incredible, so vibrant. The guy in my photos was really rockin’ it! And, if you ever go to Mexico City, do not miss La Fonda del Recuerdo Restaurant.
