The East Bay of San Francisco and the Central Valley have an abundant supply of old barns nestled in their hills and valleys. Once upon a time this was farming country; now, houses have sprung up where orchards and fields once flourished. Ah, the simple life that used to be.
In the photo above you can see traffic on a rural road on one side of the barn and pasture. Old, and a mix of the new. I love that the barns and pastures are left to co-exist with the swirling world around them.
The beauty of this area is that I can easily see and feel the way it used to be
Farming, and raising cattle and horses are still a big part of this area
This is hardly a place that’s been staged. How long has that wagon wheel been propped there? An old part left to rust, being replaced with a bit of updated equipment

I very much enjoy your words and photos in this blog. Quite a little documentary you made out of it. My favourite picture is no doubt the second one with the displace cow looking completely lost in traffic. Great humour and well seen.

Thanks so much Otto. The other photos of the barn look so bucolic and peaceful….I was standing on a sidewalk in front of the barn and behind me was a four lane street that comes off a freeway, so cars were whizzing by behind me at 60 miles an hour.

I’ve seen similar landscapes and images along outer Sacramento, chico, Sutter county…. All are beautiful such as in this post. Reminds us that old traditions and architecture are timeless and give us a sense of home. Thanks for today’s inspiration. Stay blessed.

I love these photos and your commentary. I drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco a few times a year and each and every time I just soak up the farmland. I am usually driving and I have often thought I’d like to stop and take photos of barns, farm equipment, or just the gorgeous open land. And I don’t! This post satisfied me tremendously 🙂 Debra
