Life is a Carousel, Old Chum. A PhotoBlog

We live out in the sticks  in an “exurb” of the San Francisco Bay Area, and it amazes me how good things come forth, even out here. It’s a matter of living in the moment and seeing the beauty in everything.

I’ve found this carousel at the little mall out here that fascinates me. I asked the kid who operates it if he knew how old it is, and, unfortunately, he does not. It plays soft Calliope music, real old-timey. The kids love it. I have some research to do. The detail on the animals is lovely.

I thought I’d share some photos of it with you that I took last weekend. I can’t decide which animal is my favorite, it’s a toss-up between the rooster and the tiger.

There something really magic about these old kinds of carousels indeed like taken out of a fairy tale. I am not sure which of the animals I like the best, but as for pictures, my favourite is the second to last where you really were able to capture the expression of the horse. It’s almost a little scary and the strange angel and a little awkward composition builds up around this feeling. Maybe it’s not a horse, but a dragon? Nicely done.

I really want to research the art of carousels. Is it just the whimsical creativity of each artist? Or is there some kind of history that is followed in creating each animal with it’s attachments and costume. On the tiger there is a painting of a boy on the scarf under the saddle, and also paintings on the other animals saddle and blankets or scarves.
Thanks so much for the compliment, you’ve made my day!

I LOVE CAROUSELS! And that is a gorgeous one – there is also one in the Galleria Mall in Roseville. The artwork is incredible on the one in your photos – such a lost art – fanciful and fairy tale looking.

It does look like something from a fairy tale. The colors and all. If you click on the last photo to enlarge it, the look is really great. I had so many more photos, but didn’t want to load the post down.

It’s funny how the eyes of each of these animals seem to be alternately saying, ”what are you doing, get off my back!” and ‘aaargh!’. 🙂
