Memories Lighting The Corners of my Mind

Yesterday was a day full of memories for me.  My 42nd wedding anniversary. How did that many years slip by?
Unrelated to this, a new twitter follower comes to my attention, @askhotelmode, a team of travel experts. I scan their feed and see an item on the Algonquin Hotel in New York City.  Memories flood back of my stay there in 1967. My dad had found a group of students out of NYC going to Paris for the better part of the summer to study French at the Alliance Francaise. He thought that would be something really good for me to do.
I was 17. I was scared out of my mind; I didn’t know any of these NYC people going to Paris, but I was a trooper. I took a speed course in French the month before I left to learn the basics. I felt like I was coming out of the backwoods (San Antonio, Texas), going to New York, and for god’s sake, going to France!
My dad escorted me as far as New York, and we stayed at the Algonquin. I don’t remember much, except maybe the pizza from a deli and being overwhelmed by this huge, incredibly fascinating city.
And it was just the beginning.
~~~~~
Mem’ries,
Light the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored memories
Of the way we were
Scattered pictures,
Of the smiles we left
behind…
Can it be that
it was all so simple then?
Or has time re-written every line?
If we had
the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we? Could we?…..
    God bless your father, he was a proud dad and knew you’d be okay… My dad gave me his blessings when I decided to come to the USA, it takes lot for a parent to let go when a child leaves the country… wonderful memory. 🙂
