Phoneography Challenge: San Francisco Street Demonstrations

sf6_2014_19

More often than not lately when I’m able to spend a day in San Francisco, I’ve found myself in the midst of a street demonstration or protest of  some kind. I never read about what’s going on in the City before I go in, I just show up and seem to find the action.

My husband and I were walking down Market Street to get to the Ferry Building and heard the crowd before we saw it. A very large demonstration of the Sikh community was forming for a march.  I’ll turn this over to a gallery format for the rest of the photos I took using my Samsung Galaxy (I wasn’t about to miss any photos while I took out my DSLR, and just used the phone). Click on any photo to open the gallery.

It’s always a fascinating city, diverse and active.

  1. This turned out to be much more than a post with interesting photos. Thanks, Angeline.

Something for everyone in this fabulous city!

These are really fine pictures. And very interesting about the demonstrations.

It doesn’t seem like a protest. Maybe just a commemoration just like the signs, or mayb not. Either way, a very nice spur ofthe moment sighting. And awesome job using only the cell. High Five Samsung. :D

  6. I wonder whether these marchers gathered more attention than less colourfully-clad marchers on other days? Terrific gallery of on the spot pix, Angeline. :)

I think you may have something, M. The Sikh dress is so beautiful and colorful, it captures attention. Thanks, it was exciting to take photos in the midst of all the people.

I lived in SF for a long time (used to work at the Ritz-Carlton on Stockton). It sure is a fascinating city!!

Fabulous captures Angeline! In case you are interested, they are commemorating an Indian army operation that stormed their holiest temple to flush out terrorists, calling themselves revolutionaries (they might disagree with the term, but anyone resorting to extreme violence is a terrorist in my book!) which led to the murder of PM Indira Gandhi, which in turn spawned riots that killed many more Sikhs. The operation called Bluestar was justified. The riots not.

    • Angeline M says:

Thanks for putting in the history, Madhu. The demonstrators were handing out sheets with this information, but I had not seen that it led to the murder of Indira Gandhi. I sometimes hesitate to include information revolving around demonstrations, I think so as not to stir up controversy here amongst our diverse world in WordPress, but I can see that it is essential to explain things that readers might not otherwise bother to look up to understand it better.
These demonstrators all had a resolution about them that could be felt and showed their passion for this remembrance.
Thank you again, Madhu, for bringing this forward.

      • Madhu says:

You are most welcome Angeline. I was just putting it in perspective :-) I am usually anti establishment. This issue is a bit more complicated.

      • Angeline M says:

I am as well (anti-establishment); and knowing that there must be complexities way beyond my knowing, I hoped that the photos might at least bring some knowledge of this for us in other parts of the world.

    • rommel says:

Ahhhh, Madhu to the rescue! :)

  11. Angeline, “your” city is a constant draw with such a range of activities and experiences. These images are yet another example of its open arms to this today and that tomorrow. And yes, you found the action. Happy Photo Challenge.
