Backing Up

The last post entry found us in Mexico already, but I must back up the Hudson and mention just a few more preparatory idiosyncracies that my parents had to make sure we were ready for the trip. Actually any trip, whether it was an hour away or a week’s travel. Food had to be prepared and packed in the front of the car for easy access. Sandwiches, olives, pickles, chips, cookies, cokes; but no matter what, there had better be olives or none of it was any good. Don’t ask, I have no idea why.

Pulling out of the driveway of our house I always felt a sense of elation. I was getting away to explore, see new sights, meet new people and greet the cousins I loved and only saw once or twice a year in Mexico. This was an adventure; one never knew what was going to happen.

Our first stop on the trip was about two hours away in Dilley, Texas. There was a diner that filled up water jugs for free and my Mom and Dad felt that this was the last stop where we could get safe drinking water. Never mind that we had just left home two hours ago and hadn’t even touched the water in the car. But they were right. The water from the diner in Dilley, Texas always tasted so sweet, so much better than water from home. Maybe it was because we knew that after that jug was empty we were at the mercy of the water in Mexico.

Aye, Dios mio!
